Even simple recreational flyers need to be aware of FAA rules & regulations. Read on to learn about taking the hobbyist test and what steps are necessary before flying a new drone.

So you’ve decided to get yourself a consumer drone for some flying fun on the weekends and shareable content, but before you take off, there is one last step you must do.

The FAA states that “The law requires that all recreational flyers pass an aeronautical knowledge and safety test and provide proof of passage if asked by law enforcement or FAA personnel.”

Luckily, this is a straightforward and simple requirement—read on to learn all the necessary steps to get you flying worry-free.

  1. The first step is to visit the FAA DroneZone (where you can also register your drone if it weighs 250 grams or more). Here, you can create your account to attach all certificates and drone registrations for easy access.

  2. Next, you will want to review the rules for Recreational Flyers and the requirements defined by the FAA.

  3. Once familiar with the Recreational Flyers requirements, you will want to pass the TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test).

  4. Upon completion, you will be able to attach it to your FAA DroneZone account and receive a certificate that you can present to law enforcement officers if requested.

  5. You are now clear to fly your drone! Be careful to secure your certificate as they do not provide replacements and you will have to retake the test if you lose it.

The TRUST is a valuable resource to help everyone know the proper drone rules before flying and ensures a safer experience for everyone both in the air and on the ground!
